About Orris & Ash

Orris & Ash is the fragrance everything else on the bench is measured against. It opens sharp — bergamot and a pinch of black pepper — and within half an hour the orris takes over: cool, powdery, a little like violets and a little like clean earth.

The orris is Tuscan iris root, dried for six years before it is worth distilling. That is why it costs what it does and why we make this fragrance in small batches four times a year rather than all at once.

By the afternoon it has dried down to oakmoss and frankincense, close to the skin. Most people stop noticing it themselves around then, which is exactly when other people start to.

“Orris & Ash is the first fragrance people have asked me about in years. Quiet, but it is still there on my scarf the next morning.”
